Montefiore Medical Center – Albert Einstein College of Medicine Bronx, NY 14.5 months 5 Students Postgraduate Residency for Physician Assistants in Surgery Montefiore’s Physician Assistant residency is the oldest postgraduate residency program in the country. In 1971, just six years after the Physician Assistant profession was founded, Montefiore became the first hospital to include PA’s as house officers on inpatient surgical services. Those PA’s quickly became an integral part of the surgical team at Montefiore and their clinical experience was formalized into a 12 month residency in general surgery and surgical specialties. In 1978, a pre-internship didactic phase was added in order to provide a firm scientific foundation for the clinical phase of the program. The current residency is still structured in this way, that is, with a classroom based educational program followed by clinical rotations. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) / Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) Physician Assistant Residency in Geriatric Medicine is to provide a superb educational environment in which certified Physician Assistants (PA-C) are trained to work within an interdisciplinary team to provide the highest level of patient-centered care for Veterans with complex medical issues. Overview Training for the year-long residency occurs in a dynamic clinical and academic environment, to expose the residents to basic and advanced geriatric concepts and techniques. Training is provided in clinics, on hospital units, and across a broad continuum of care from house calls to hospice. Under the mentorship of our outstanding faculty, the resident gains the confidence and experience necessary to practice in a wide variety of academic and private settings.
